Birding in Portugal : 200 first species!

European Roller Portugal

For more than 2 years now, I have been exploring as much as possible the best birding hotspots in southern Portugal, but also little-known corners where I sometimes make great discoveries. I have also guided several excursions and nature tours with Salva Fauna, mainly in Alentejo and the Algarve, and this allowed me to show extraordinary birds to our guests: Great Bustard, European Roller, White-rumped Swift, Little Bustard, etc etc.. the list is long!

After quickly observing the first 100 species of birds in the first weeks, Portugal is now the country where I have observed the most species. My expertise grows every day, and I now know the ornithological wonders of the south in all seasons. My favorite birding hotspots, depending on the time of year, are:

  • spring in the Alentejo plains

  • autumn migration on the Sagres Peninsula

  • winter in the Tagus Estuary

I still have a lot to learn, to discover, and I have not yet been able to see certain species that I would like to observe for the first time. My next adventures will take me, I hope:

  • to the Azores and Madeira to observe endemic species such as the Azores Finch or the Madeira Firecrest;

  • at sea, off the Portuguese coast, to discover species of seabirds such as the Manx Shearwater or the Bulwer's Petrel;

  • towards the exotic species of the country that I have not yet seen, like the Red Avadavat.

In any case, bird watching in Portugal is often a magical experience, we never get tired of it! If this tempts you, do not hesitate to contact me, it would be a pleasure for me to guide you for a day trip or a multi-day tour.
