The Ruby-crowned Kinglet (Regulus calendula) is one of my favorite bird species in California. This restless passerine forages the shrubs and trees with so much energy that it is very hard to follow. I watched this male going frantically from shrub to shrub at the Laguna Niguel Regional Park. He stopped for a few seconds and I was able to get this shot. I am glad we can see its stunning ruby crown, as it is hidden most of the time. Ruby-crowned Kinglets (Regulus calendula) weigh only 5 to 10 grams, and are about 10cm long. A beautiful tiny bird.
